Can't import .ai files with Scribus 1.4.5 MAC

Dear all,

I just installed Scribus 1.4.5 on my MAC. I am a total newby.
So I also got the ghostscript 8.71 and thought I could go and start with Scribus.
I got some .ai files from a friend but it won't let me import them.
I always get the following error: "The file could not be imported"

Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm running the same Scribus version as you and couldn't successfully import a test .ai file either - so you're not doing anything wrong!

As .ai is listed under the import vector file filetype it might be a mac only issue.
Until somebody else can confirm or provide a fix I'd download and install yourself Inkscape https://inkscape.org/en/download/mac-os/
You should be able to open your Illustrator file and save it to svg which Scribus will happily import.

It's not a Mac-only issue.

Scribus only handles AI files at a basic level as it doesn't have the same tools as Illustrator (and so can't draw things the same way). It will try, but nothing is guaranteed.

I'd agree with SuburbanWorrier's suggestion; pass the file through Inkscape first, but you might still have trouble with some features that Scribus can't handle.
