What is "Parent tabs" in the Style Manager

I'm setting a new style with tabs (tabulators) and this button labeled "Parent tabs" appears. I click on it. From my viewpoint, what happens is that now the "Done" button in the Style Manager is disabled, and when I try to edit the Default Paragraph Style, in the "Base On" box it says, "A default style cannot be assigned a parent style." What is going on, and how do I get out of this? I want the Done button back.

this option allows you to return to the tabstop settings of the parent style (if the new style is based on another one...)

doesn't happen on any of my working systems (lubuntu, mac, win)...

of course you can't base the default style on something else – the default style is the ultimate base!
