Title: Saving an edited template
Post by: MommaBear on March 03, 2016, 06:20:57 PM
Googling this subject produced one hit: a bug report (more of a feature request) that dates from 2008. Considering the problems I'm having, I figure I'm overlooking something very obvious.

The only way I can see to edit a template is File->New from template.

If I change anything then save, it saves as a new document. So I have to Save as template, which means giving it a new name, new description, etc. Is this really the only way to do it?

MommaBear, I think the "Save As Template" function should be thought of more as a "Right, I'm done with this and there's nothing left to change so now I want to make it a template" function.

You should really only make something into a template when it's complete and ready to be used as one. Otherwise you'll have loads of things that look like templates but shouldn't be used as such.

Probably best to save stuff as normal documents until they're ready to be made into templates.

I'm coming around to grokking that. Problem is, I don't quite grok templates yet.  :-[

I understand that, once you know fully what you're doing, you can set up a template as you suggest. But until you do, you experiment and tweak.  Not about how you want it to look, but to see what the template automates and what it doesn't. I'll post a separate question about the specific problem I'm having.

For the benefit of other newbies, I'd recommend calling experimental templates 01, 02, etc.
