Beginner Talk / Re: [1.4.6] Selected text character count

Thx GarryP, I managed to count the lines' character by breaking them into paragraphs and then using the story editor.

My intent was to find the average number of characters for different fonts in a 90mm column.
Text and Typography / Text colour

Dear all
I have a word document (odt) which features question and answers.  I have made the questions in red and answers in blue.  But when this document got into the text frame, it is in black. Moreover, the line alignment is no the same as odt.
Please help me how to fix this issue.

depending on your mouse / touch pad / whatever there are different ways to open the context menu.

the most common way to open the context menu is to right click on something.
most macs don'have buttons on the mouse, so you have to find out how to activate context menues with your hardware.
(probably a double / triple touch (a touch with two or three fingers) on your device).

once you're able to activate the context menu on a text frame, you'll see where the "text info" is.

but, normally, you don't really need to know the number of characters and words in scribus.
this something you should do before importing your text into scribus.
PDF Generation / Converting Text to Paths?

I am trying to use Scribus to format a manuscript for IngramSpark (if anyone has heard of them or, better yet, worked with them).  IS requires PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002.

Quote from: IS File Creation Guide
Resolution:600 ppi for 1-bit black & white line art
300 ppi for 8-bit grayscale continuous tone images
Color Space:Grayscale
LPI (lines per inch):106
Preferred file format:PDF (.pdf) file - dimensions vary by trim size (see below)
Bleed:0.125" (3 mm) except on bind side
PDF producer:Acrobat Distiller, Export from InDesign
PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002
Margins:Recommended minimum 0.5" (13 mm) on all sides.
File naming:Single file naming: isbn_txt.pdf or isbntxt.pdf

My problem is that the Scribus Preflight says everything checks out for both.  But Adobe says there are no embedded fonts, and IS says it is unable to be validated.  When I contacted support:

Quote from: From Support
Listed below is the response from our IT department.

'The issue is that they converted all the text to paths. This is causing a problem with the preflight and would definitely not print.  Please have them resolve and try again.

I don't know how I did this or what happened, but this is very frustrating, and I've been fighting with it for weeks trying to get it compliant.  When I export it as a PDF, it has all the fonts embedded (figured out to disable the "subsets" in doc setup and pref). But Adobe says there are no embedded fonts.

On top of that, they require the interior to be grayscale, but I don't know if it's a problem yet because they say they can't even validate the file.

I really don't want to have to pay for Adobe when Scribus boasts compliant PDF/X.  Help. :(

Edit: If it matters, the cover file has the same reqs, but CMYK instead of grayscale.  It is image-only (no text frames) and it was accepted fine.

Edit Edit:

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Scribus: 1.4.6 (tried downloading 1.5.3, but file crashed the program)

Thanks a.l.e,

I couldn't quite follow your suggested path.  I am a Mac user which might have something to do with it.  I "selected" the a text frame (red outline with little corner and side box nodes), but then could not find a "text info" to click on, nothing presented itself.  I looked in the main menu and at best found Scripter > Scribus Scripts > Info Box, but there was nothing there.

By the way, I use(d) Scribus to format a novella, and once I got the hang of it found it would work for longer works a chapter at a time.

Welcome to the forum eupiteco.

Right-clicking a text frame and selecting "Info" from the menu will show you the paragraph, line, word and character counts for that frame but I don't know how accurate they are or exactly what they count. For example, using 10 paragraphs of sample English text gives 10, 32, 662, 3491 respectively from "Info" but 10, <no count>, 662, 3482 in the Story Editor. Different character counts but I don't know why.

Any figures in braces (from Info) are - as far as I can tell - the amount of text that cannot be shown, normally because the frame isn't large enough to hold all of the text.

Getting back to your specific needs, as far as I know, you cannot find out these metrics from a selection.

Dear sirs
I have 4 or 5 paragraphs in a page. I want to change a paragraph to red.  In some other paragraph, I wanted to highlight a sentence in yellow.
Would you please guide me as to how these can be done.

Hi! I'm looking for a specific character count tool in scribus. Already found the story editor witch gives the number of characters in a paragraph, but I need to know the number of characters in the lines of the text frame. I thought that by selecting (highlighting) a line that would be possible, but I can't find a way to do so.

Help is appreciated

for a specific text frame, right click on the text frame and and click on "text info".

for the whole document: use the script to export the full document's text and use your usual tool.
(it would not be hard to create a word counter for the document (if it indeed does not exist) but i somehow wonder if it would really be that useful: hint: you're not really supposed to write longer texts in scribus...)

Hi Folks,

I have searched high and low, but cannot find if Scribus has a word count feature.  If it does how do you access it?  What's the work around if it doesn't?
