Title: File Import Formats
Post by: mnawij on March 23, 2018, 03:15:29 AM
A wish of mine ;D

A pdf file importer/converter such as:
https://markzware.com/products/pdf2dtp/
so that scribus could open a pdf file for true editing.  Would this not be easier to do with the open pdf standard than trying to reverse engineer the various idml, quark, publisher, etc....for import into scribus?  Since I am not a coder I do not really know...

Cheers!

scribus 1.5 does import PDFs.

but the text gets vectorized.

so, what's missing is somebody working on getting scribus to (optionally) import text as such.
if possible, by contributing it to poppler (iirc, scribus is using the the poppler pdf library to import pdfs)

if you know somebody interested in working on this, you can start collecting some money to pay her...

I must be doing something wrong, whenever I import a pdf file into an image frame I cannot select the various items, it is like selecting a picture.  Is there another way to import a pdf file and be able to select the various elements within the pdf such as type or images?

file > import > get vector file...

this is 1.5 only...

just open as a new document in 1.5.3, you can then move components to your existing document

get vector file... seems misleading since I would also be looking for any raster images to bring in also to the Scribus document.  I will give a try and see what results I get.

Thanks!

excuse me sir, when you save a document as SVG or PDF, you also save them in a vector format... but you don't expect the bitmap images to be converted to vectors.

personally, i don't suggest to open the PDFs with file > open.
and i'd really like Scribus to only open .sla files.
it's just a psychological / philosophical thing.

scribus can import and export pdfs.
and that's good.

but it should only be able to open and save .sla files (at least as long it loses information when importing and converting to pdf).
sadly, the team does not agree with me and too many people are deceived by the results, because they then think that scribus is a pdf editor. which is clearly not true. (even if you can edit PDFs at some extent).

rant finished.
now i will be able to sleep well : -  )

I completely agree with you that Scribus should only open .sla files.  We can discuss file formats or menu vocabulary another day in another post.  Thank you for answering my post and I am well known for going on rants myself.

Cheers,
