I'm not sure if there's actually a template for this anywhere.....you might want to check out this earlier forum thread:

hi

it would indeed be good if somebody would contribute some greeting cards for scribus...

this is something any user could contribute...

just go to the shop around the corner, buy a card you like, sit for a couple of hours at your computer and do it a little better than the original one :-)

Many Thanks for the reply. I saw the thread earlier and am prepared to give it a go but I do not know if I have the technical knowlege to carry it through.

Creating a template does not take any technical knowledge, it's all about design.

I am now ready to make a cover for my printer,  Lightning Source Cover Template:  and have had their template her are the details  B&W 5.83 x 8.27 in or 210 x 148 mm (A5) Perfect Bound on White w/Gloss Lam 128 pages.

Now I am attempting to use Chang Chen's book but I thing his template is an A4 book rather than the one I am doing.

Or am I wrong?

For this job I am intending to sue Scribus v1.5

Omigod! Can't we settle this out of court?    :)

Sorry John_Jason_Jordan, the word that I had intended was 'use' 1.5.  not sue.

But can I get the answer, please.

hello wena

in gang chen's book it is a 8.5" to 11" cover.
but this doesn't matter – you have to use the safety- and bleed-areas indicated by your printshop anyway. chen tells you how to deal with this dimensions – the 8.5 to 11 layout is just an example...

Thank you, but how do I know the safety margin and the bled aria. There is one or the editor of the book on these forum I wonder if he/she could help.

I have asked Lightning Source and then I said that I will do the cover with Scribes 1. 5.

This is what they said Scribus 1.5 "It not a program we recommend for creating files."

I am amazed that they said that.

you have to ask the printshop, where the book will finally be printed.

Quote...Scribus 1.5 "It not a program we recommend for creating files."

it's my recommendation too, that you create the cover in the 'stable' version 1.4.0rc6 and use the 1.5 only to export the pdf/x-1a (which can't be done in 1.4...)

That is a good idea utnik to do so in 1.4 first then to go and finish off in 1.5.

But my problem remains the same the template from LS dose not tell me how much the bleed aria is.

I need to know that so I can setup the page for the template.

I have asked LS but they say that they do not provide technical support.

Did you read what LS say about scribus?

Wena,

I have never used LSI, but there is a regular participant in the Scribus listserve who uses them all the time. Just today he replied to a thread there and I think his answer may help you, pasted below. Note at the end the instructions for joining the listserve.

From: john Culleton <wexfordpress.com>
To: scribus@lists.scribus.net
Subject: Re: [scribus] Screenshots for Scribus Release
Date: Sat, 26 Nov 2011 10:44:12 -0500
Reply-To: Scribus User Mailing List <scribus@lists.scribus.net>

The conversion to PDF X/1-a:2001 is very simple. I load the sla file into Scribus 1.5.0 and save from there. To keep LSI happy I
also use an ICC profile that is taken from a standard ICC profile but with in ink saturation limit of 240%. The profile can be
found here: http://wexfordpress.com/tex/SWOPcoated5_240.icc (http://wexfordpress.com/tex/SWOPcoated5_240.icc)

A kind person on the icc mailing list created it for me.

For those who lack 1.5.0 and who prepare files for LSI I suggest saving as a tiff file. LSI will accept that format.

I don't use the LSI template but I do follow their cover file naming convention of course. I created my own Scribus template
facility here:

http://wexfordpress.net/template.html (http://wexfordpress.net/template.html)

You fill out a form and get another form back with the values to plug into Scribus (any version.) The values are overall height
and width of the document (including bleeds) and the positions of vertical guides.

Downloading and compiling 1.5.0 is not so simple for Windows and OS X users, although it can be done of course. That is why I
campaigned (unsuccessfully) for inclusion of the X/1-a output in some earlier version of Scribus. I am happy with my nightly
download of 1.5.0, but others don't have the facilities for compilation etc. that I have with Slackware Linux.

I note that the compilation dates of both 1.4.0 RC6 and 1.5.0 are up to November 21. I am very happy with either product. I use
1.4.0 RC6 in the expectation that it will be more complete and more clean than 1.5.0 but I have no objective evidence to support
that theory.

It would be nice if the former facility for accessing the style editor from within the story editor was revived, but I have learned to live with that unfortunate limitation.

i took a look at the ls-website and found the templates: http://www1.lightningsource.com/referencetemplates.aspx#ColorCoverTemplates (http://www1.lightningsource.com/referencetemplates.aspx#ColorCoverTemplates) there are all the dimensions you need:
what i was missing is the color profile. (but i didn't search the whole site...)

don't care about – they don't know scribus.
if the file is ok, they will accept and print it...

just a warning: john culleton suggestions are not always the safest to follow.

mostly, he has come to his solutions by try and error: it may work for his specific case but this does not imply that you will have the same luck or that what he suggests is a good way to do.

Thank you, I have bought another little book in the hope that it will help to get me going. And I have been able to now get LS to answer my question. Now to properly understand CMYK and DPI's

Thanks again for your help.

I seem to be going round and round on this subject. I have posted on this forum the dimensions of our book. It tells me the Spin, text box dimensions but there is then the space between them and the front and back covers.

Another problem I am facing is that the Cover template provided by LS is in a PDF format, and I cant find how to put that into Scribus 1.4 or 1.5.

If then I was to change the template into bitmap then I would distort.

What I really need to work out is the dimension from let to right of the landscape of the temple.

I have bought two books that is supposed to provide the answer to these questions. This matter is now getting out of hand by now.

hello wena

you don't have to insert the pdf from ls into your scribus file. (in a picture frame it would be possible, but with a lot of room for errors...)

you have the trim width and for the spine width there is a 'spine width & book weight calculator' under 'book design essentials' on the ls-website. (the spine width depends on the book block, so you have to know the number of the pages and the sort of the paper...)
with two times the trim width and one time the spine you have the width of your final document. for the height it's the indicated trim height.
this is what you insert in the upper part of 'document setup'.
below that you have to set the bleeds to 6mm for all sides.
for the spine i would add two vertical guide lines.
if you like you can add the recommended 6mm margin guides as well...

i hope this helps!

I don't understand all that sorry utnik. Would you please tell the the dimensions, of

"B&W 5.83 x 8.27 in or 210 x 148 mm (A5) Perfect Bound on White w/Gloss Lam 128 pages as LS gave me.

just the totals of the whole cover, please, please.

I would be so grateful.

Or tell me how to use these numbers to get the right width.

hello wena

i just made a cover template for you.
here is it: http://db.tt/0Cw57beA – it's a scribus1.4.0rc6 file.
i can't do this every time – please try to compare this with the informations from the ls pdf, next time you should do your own setup...

the red frame is the final cover.
pictures or background colors should reach the black one (bleed).
the green frames (safety areas) are on a separate layer, called 'safety margins' – you may uncheck or delete it, when the work is finished (in preview mode it disappears and it won't print anyway...)

good luck

I thank you very much utnik, and I am hoping that this is the answer to my problem. From your template the only verifiable there will be is the spin width. I am sure I shall be able to use that as a guide.

Again Thanks very much.
