General Discussion / Re: English and Hebrew Words on one line
« Last post by a.l.e on Today at 11:09:02 am »
ciao prunk

a. the story editor is not the default way to edit text in a frame. just double click the frame to type the text.
b. hebrew is only supported starting from the development release 1.5.3 (or 1.5.4)
c. the fact that you can type hebrew glyphs in the story editor does not mean that scribus can correctly handle them.

General Discussion / English and Hebrew Words on one line
« Last post by prunk on August 16, 2018, 11:02:26 pm »
Good Day, I am using Scribus version 1.4.6.
I am trying to have a line of text with both English and Hebrew Words. This works perfectly in LibreOffice but once I try to this Scribus the Hebrew characters do not show up even when I use the story editor.
I made sure the font is used correctly for the English and the Hebrew words but to no avail the Hebrew is showing up as small blocks outside the story editor and a few blocks for specific Hebrew letters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Import the styles first and then copying the text boxes from one to another should work. I am not near my 'big PC' so can't run through the exact process.

My image editor Faststone displays images right way up every time, don't ask me how it does this, so when images are imported they can sometimes look rotated but are actually the way they are!

The reason the images disappear off the Scribus doc when rotated it s coz of the rotation point. By default it is one of the corners, change it to the central spot (you'll see all the coordinates change for the frame) and it will spin on the spot.

as the other topic says: the real solution is in scribus 1.5.
there you can put a master page layer on top of a page layer... you cannot do that in the current stable scribus 1.4.

as a workaround, you can

- create a frame with the page number sign in it
- correctly place it in the current page
- send it to the scrapbook
- open the scrapbook and keep it open
- click on each page to select and double click on the scrapbook item to place it at the "original" position

of course, you can create two scrapbook items, one for the left side and one for the right side...

a bit tedious most of all if you  change your mind afterwards, but you should manage to add all the page numbers in about a minute...

I found that work with the templates are the only solution?  (,1263.msg5567.html#msg5567)

General Discussion / Re: Has anyone used Scribus with BookBaby for book printing?

Yes, but the problem remains. Converting frmo RGB to CMYK requires a color profile for the conversion.

Normally you use a color profile that is for the specific printer and paper used. So if a printing company does not tell you what profile to use, they do likely not manage colors very good.
Text and Typography / Re: Can't create new paragraph style

Cancel the above -- the answer was blindingly obvious once I turned on my second screen. The palette was over there. Not quite sure why, but anyway all is well.  :D
Text and Typography / Can't create new paragraph style

I am very familiar with DTP software, having used InDesign for the last 15 years and QuarkXpress and PageMaker before that. I have just installed Scribus on a Windows 7 64-bit machine, but am having difficulty setting a new paragraph style. When I press F3, the Text Properties pallette comes up (the Edit menu says F4 activates the Style Manager dialog pallette, but that doesn't work). But there is no facility to create a New style - no button, nothing that looks like the illustrations in the various online tutorials that I have checked out, no panel on the LH side of the Style Manager to create a new style. All help appreciated, as I have a major annual report to get out very soon.

dragonfly, can you explain why a PDF generated by pandoc would be less likely to be tweaked than a PDF generated by Scribus?

I did not explain my reasoning very well.
My thinking is that if a PDF is thrown back by the printer, suggesting that it requires changes, it should be a very quick process for the author (rather than the printer) to edit markdown source.  I write with admittedly no experience in the end print process.

[Later edit]
Of course you will have the problem that they require images converted to CMYK, but do not seem to specify a profile for that.

Searching further, I find that ImageMagick can convert image RGB to CYMK, through command line, but I have yet to test this.
