Beginner Talk / Drag & drop not working in Arrange Pages
« Last post by PemburySinger on January 12, 2018, 11:50:47 pm »
Hi, I'm working slowly through the tutorial, and have hit a stumbling block with Arrange Pages. I'm using Windows 7, and so far have only managed to get the cover page and a left hand master page into the lower Document Pages section. Scribus refuses to drop a right hand page in the lower section. I was only able to drop the left hand master page by saving the file, closing it, and then going back into it, because the Arrange Pages crashed and everything greyed out. The attached shows what my Arrange Pages looks like in Windows 7.

Is this because I'm working through Microsoft, rather than through Linux?

Feeling frustrated.

Welcome to the forum lesleysprite.

I don't use MathJax myself but a quick look in the documentation shows that: "MathJax contains customized webfont versions of [the above] fonts." It sounds like they've been messed around with in some way and that might be making it difficult for Scribus to embed them properly. The fonts are cusomised for the web, rather than being "normal" DTP fonts.

It's also possible that Scribus can't embed the fonts - for various reasons - even if it says it is going to do so. It's difficult to diagnose the actual problem in these cases as even some fonts that are marked internally as embeddable are not embedded by Scribus.

I realise this doesn't help much but could you try using different fonts, or do you really have to use the MathJax fonts?

Thanks for pointing that out utnik. I've added a note to my post above.

hi les

either you provide the cells of your table with a background before you place them, or you put a white rectangle behind them after the import.

Beginner Talk / Vector Graphics and backgrounds

I have a kind of watermark on my master pages (it's a very pale greyscale image basically) which is under my text as intended. I have some tables which I am importing as vector files but they are transparent and the background shows through, unlike normal images in frames.

How to stop the background being visible in the chart image frame?

(sorry for any incorrect terminology)

PDF Generation / Problems embedding fonts
« Last post by lesleysprite on January 11, 2018, 05:33:04 pm »
Hi, I am getting a note back from my printer that fonts are not properly embedded in my pdf can anyone help? Here is what I am doing:

I am using mathjax fonts, I untick the subset box for them in the font section of the document preferences.
I export as a pdf, select pdf/x-1a compatibility as instructed by my printer.
I check all the fonts are in the embed box, not the outline box and they are.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Layout Issues / Re: Overlapping bleeds

hi lucanapo

as garry mentions, a gap between the displayed pages will fix the problem. but it will produce a new one…

but first: do you really need bleeds on the binding edge of your pages? (depends on the binding method…)

Probably not strictly necessary. Itsjust that we have some sort of sub cover inside the mag, one for each piece of literature, and we often want full page images. So I got the habitof bleeding.the.edges after the typography asked for it.

Thank you so much guys, I was going to work around it with master pages, but your solution is better and simpler. Thanks again :)

if you need bleeds on the inner edge, you could use the mentioned gap ('file' → 'documenrt setup' → 'display' → 'gaps between pages') – but take care with overlapping elements! if you insert an image which spans over both pages of a spread, you need two separate image frames to add the supplementary area for the bleeds (a part of the image covering twice the width of one bleed needs to be printed twice. otherwise you'll miss this part in the final product.)
without the gap, you could (in most cases) just place your graphics and images over your double page spreads. that's why i would ask about the need for bleeds on the binding edge.
