Text and Typography / Why is Scribus 1.5.3 changing chosen font?
« Last post by TSRalex on January 18, 2018, 01:09:49 pm »
Using version 1.5.3 at some (!!) text objects the chosen font is changed by Scribus automatically, at some other the selected font stays OK.

At all objects the Text-Editor was used and font "Ottawa Bold" (or sometimes "Ottawa Plain") was chosen. Opening the Text-Editor again the font has changed to "A028 Extrabold Regular"!  :o

Any idea about or a solution for? Thank you very much!

Next question is, how do I force the page numbering to start a 1 on a different page? For example, my document has assumed that the cover page is page 1, and has commenced numbering the following pages from page 2 as the first left hand page.

If I want to keep the inside cover page unnumbered, and have the first right hand page as a contents page that has either a "page 1", or a roman numeral as its number, how would I go about adjusting the numbering to suit?

Hi GarryP,

I didn't say that, and in fact I didn't do that, because the tutorial didn't make that clear. However, I just tried what you said, and it put a # in the text frame of the left hand master page. Upon checking the file, it seems to have worked, so thanks, that's great!  ;D

I think it would be very useful to a lot of people if there was a page - probably on the wiki - containing a table with the following information:

* Language;
* The earliest version of Scribus that has been proved to properly handle that language;
* The earliest version of Scribus that is shipped with a spell checker for that language.

(By "proved to properly handle that language" I mean that people have been using that version of Scribus to successfully and consistently create documents in that language without any major problems.)

This would give people a quick and easy way of seeing if the language they wanted to use was supported.
Some footnotes could also be supplied to give potential users some indication of which features might not work "perfectly" for certain languages, E.g. which dialects are not fully supported.

This may give some people reservations about using Scribus - if the language they need isn't on the list - but it might also prevent people from being frustrated by trying to use it with languages it doesn't support.

An extra column could also be given listing some free fonts that have been proven to work well with each language. That would help people to get working on their documents quicker without much extra hassle.

I remembered that you're using WIndows 7 but I was writing with the understanding that most people who come to this thread will not necessarily have read your previous posts. Most people who come to the forum see the threads/posts out of chronological sequence so it's preferable to give them a reasonable amount of information as early as possible. (That's why I also gave Linux and Mac information.)

Can you confirm the procedure below please?

A. You create a text frame;
B. You double-click the text frame to invoke in-line editing;
C. You press the Ctrl key and keep it depressed;
D. You press the Alt key and keep both it and the Ctrl key depressed;
E. You press the Shift key and keep it and the previous two keys depressed;
F. You press the P key and then release all four keys;
G. When the keys have been released, the text "Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P" (without the quotes) is inserted into the text frame.

Is that what you are saying is happening, or is it something else? I just want to make sure we're both talking about the same thing.

if you try, you have to try the development version.

english, arabic and dari should work.
i think that chinese is should somehow work even in the stable version.

i don't know anything about tigrinya and amharic.

with a bit of luck, you could be able to achieve your goal.

if you're willing to try it out, please report here, what were the results.
Beginner Talk / Re: Text re-wrapping upon Export>Image

I've never seen this happen.
I've exported lots of documents as images and the text has never wrapped differently to how it was on-screen.
Would it be possible for you to supply more information?
An SLA (or Collected For Output bundle), a PDF that's wrapped "right" and an image that's wrapped "wrong" would help.
It's difficult to say what's going on without being able to actually see it happen.

You're welcome.

It's worth noting that if you're going to be justifying text then you should also be learning about more serious typographical issues. Simply justifying the text will leave you with all kinds of big spaces in the text that will probably make it look worse than having a ragged edge.

Have a look at manual tracking and word spacing (and other related things) to see what you can do to make the text look much nicer.

This article might be somewhere good to start:

Most info about language support that I've found seems outdated, so I thought I'd ask:

I need to make a leaflet in English, Chinese, Tigrinya, Amharic, Arabic and Dari (Persian).

Is it worth downloading Scribus for this?
