Title: Can't install templates (1.4.6 on Lubuntu)
Post by: Leonard03 on March 09, 2017, 10:38:28 PM
Hey folks, just downloaded Scribus earlier today to give it a spin and can't seem to install templates. I've tried adding them to the /usr/share/scribus/templates folder, the /home/me/.scribus/templates folder as well as in a different folder which I then selected in Preferences > General as the location for document templates. None of these things caused the templates to show up in the New from Template dialog. Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

here what i can recommend you:

- in the "general" section of the preferences, set the path to your own templates
- when creating templates, put them in that path.

does it work for you?

Unfortunately that doesn't work. And in this case, I'm actually trying to install some templates I from the web. They end in a ".sla" format, is this correct? I also had another thought, could it be that since I'm running on linux, I don't have the fonts used in the templates?

no, this won't work. the location is correct, but a scribus template is not just the .sla file – it's a collection of the .sla file, usually two different .png preview files, sometimes other stuff like placed images etc. – and finally there's a file called ,template.xml' wich organizes all the files of one or more templates.

the easiest way to create a template from an .sla file ist to open it and chose ,file' ,save as template'. afaik scribus will point automatically to the right directory...

Huh, well the templates didn't come with any other files, just a bunch of ".sla"s. I just tried opening them, but gave me a fatal error:
Quote
File /home/niall/Documents/Scribus Files/Templates/Books-8_5X11.sla is not in an acceptable format
The file may be damaged or may have been produced in a later version of Scribus.
Which doesn't make sense to me as I'm running 1.4.6, and I doubt they would have made them with the developmental branch.

you can check this when you open one of the files with a text editor. you find the scribus version in the second line.

yep utnik, i said: create the template in that directory.

not move your .sla there :-)

if leonard has downloaded a .sla file and not a template, the -- of course -- he will have to first open it in scribus and then save as a template in the directory he has defined.
