Title: Importing and editing photo's
Post by: funnystuff on October 15, 2012, 02:58:53 PM
Hi, I'm new to Scribus but have had some good results. However when I try to edit a picture it comes up with 'GIMP' not installed. I have 'GIMP' installed on my computer but do I need to somehow link it with Scribus or do I need to find it in your website and dowload it direct into Scribus? Help Please!!!

Thanks

which os / distribution?

however, the easiest way is to open the image from gimp and edit it.

personally i always have a copy of gimp, inskcape and scribus open...

Hi,

thanks for your reply but I'm not sure I quite understand it. How do I open an image in Gimp then edit it and import it to scribus? What I was trying to do was make the image fit the page but it doesn't take it to the frame it always falls short. I am designing Certificates  on A4 Landscape so I need the image to fit the page. I used to use Publisher that let you stretch the image manually but Scribus doesn't

hi funnystuff,

if you want to resize an image on the scribus canvas and you know that it has enough resolution, just resize the frame and have a look in the properties palette (it's in the window menu). in the "image" tab you will be able to scale the image to the frame.

indeed, no need to edit the image if you just want to scale how it looks in scribus!

First off:

Scribus does not embed images in the document. If you edit the file on disk (opening it in GIMP) Scribus will read the new file (at least when the document is opened the next time, not sure if Scribus updates on the fly).

This also means that when launching GIMP from Scribus, the result will be the same: GIMP opens the file from disk, no "object" from Scribus.

So make sure you always use a copy of the file if you intend to change it.

Second:

The path to the GIMP executable is in preferences under External tools and Image processing tool.

Third:

As a.l.e mentions, if it's just a matter of resizing, have a look at the properties palette.

Thanks for that I am not sure if it will help but I'll give it a try. I have another problem in that the certificates I am designing I'm emailing to my friend and she uses Apple and I use Windows but when she tried ot open it, it just showed a load of jumbled text. I thought this was an open program that could be opened on most computers. Any ideas?

Thanks

hi funnystuff,

what are you sending to your friend?
what has your friend to do with the file?

basically, if your friend only has to print or review the document, you can produce a PDF and send it to her.

if she needs to edit it, you will have to send her the project collected for output (have a look in the file menu) and she will have to download scribus for her system!

As a.l.e says you should use the Collect for output.

Also, Scribus does not embed fonts, they will have to be installed in the other computer. Collect for output can put the fonts in the folder, but they will still have to be installed on the other computer (how that is done depends on the operating system).

And of course your friend must first have Scribus installed on her computer.
