No Fonts to embed in PDF in Windows 8
« on: June 27, 2013, 05:53:38 pm »
I had just to change my notebook, because old was not to repair and I have to wait maybe some weeks for spare parts.

My old notebook was Windows 7 64 Bit
My new notebook is Windows 8

I used the same installation file for Scribus 1.4.2

Now I just saved first time with the new notebook and wondered, that the PDF is 128 kb shorter.

I found out, that the difference is at embed fonts.

At the Export as PDF, Fonts, I can not select fonts to embed, only to outline

How can I embed the fonts?

hi founder

control the settings under: 'file' → 'document setup' → 'fonts' (the box 'embed in postscript' for the fonts in question should be checked…)

Now I had before export PDF 4 fonts to be embedded.

I just downloaded an PDF analyzer
http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=11211&t=0&i=1

Despite, the box at export PDF - fonts, showed 4 fonts to embed,
the PDF analyzer showed only 2.

At the last PDF created with the old notebook, PDF analyzer showed 4 fonts embeded

hi founder
  • is it the same .sla file as on the old win 7 machine?
  • are all this fonts really used in the file?
  • is the 'embed…' box checked for all four fonts?
all i can do without the related files is guess work…
btw: you don't need a separate .pdf analyzer to see wich fonts are embedded – 'ctrl' + 'd' (mac: '⌘' + 'd') in adobe reader works as well…

1.) Some text little bit changed
2.) Both not embedded files are really used
3.) All the font files used are checked

Tried this ctrl-d in Acrobat Reader

ArialRoundedMTBold
Swiss721BT-BlackCondensed

are embedded in the new version.

In the older version also embedded:

ArialBlack
ComicSansMS

and some fonts, I have never seen before

Fo1SO
Fo2SO
Fo6SO
Fo7SO

Fo1SO
Fo2SO
Fo6SO
Fo7SO

those are so called: 'type 3 fonts' – that's what scribus generates for outlined fonts.
i don't know why they can't be embedded…

Hi, I think I have the same problem with Windows 8.1 running Scribus 1.4.3: It seems not to be possible to embed Windows fonts into a pdf. However, it works for Scribus fonts.
Is this a known issue which is about to be fixed? Or is there even a known workaround (except for using a different OS)?

Best regards

hi winxi

i don't work on win 8 (hope, i'll never have to…), but it's hard to believe, that all the windows fonts can't be embedded…
did you check if 'file' → 'document setup' → 'fonts' → 'embed in postscript' is enabled for the desired fonts? – and if you like to have the whole font in the .pdf file, 'subset' should be disabled…

Hi utnik,
yes I've checked to embed the fonts in postscript and I've also tried to check/uncheck subset. The fonts did appear in the 'Fonts to embed:' field in the 'Fonts' tab of the pdf export settings. However, the resulting pdf did not contain the embedded fonts. Of course, I did not try all Windows fonts, but for the most common ones (Arial, Times New Roman, ...). The result was the same for all of them. As stated above, the Scribus fonts could be embedded.
I did also try exporting the same sla file to pdf with Scribus 1.4.3 installed on a Windows 7 machine and everything worked as expected. So it seems that this issue is specific to Windows 8. I would be happy to help sorting this out, but I'm not sure were to start.

Best regards,
winxi

a good first step leads to bugs.scribus.net.
if it's not a known problem, the developers may ask you for some log files…

Isn't this just the classic problem of embedding Open Type fonts?

http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Help:Manual_Fontsconfig#Other_notes_about_fonts_and_font_management:

Quote
OpenType Fonts - Unicode True Type Fonts cannot be fully embedded by default. This greatly simplifies handling them in other applications. OpenType Fonts and Unicode TrueType Fonts can be quite large, some larger than 10 Mb... OpenType Fonts/Unicode True Type Fonts are exported as outlines in PDF.

I don't think so. I was not able to embed any Windows fonts with Windows 8 so far, nor subsets of them. With Scribus 1.4.3 running on Windows 7 it is no problem to embed these fonts.
I'd be intereseted whether anybody else has successfully embedded Windows fonts or subsets of them when exporting to pdf with Scribus 1.4.3 running on Windows 8 64 bit.

Unfortunately, embedding fonts is essential for me and this issue prevents me from using Scribus. I would like to submit a bug report on this. However, it seems that it isn't possible to register with bugs.scribus.net, or am I missing something?

I'd like to get folks to test https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=5806 (PDFs generated using export aren't always reliably searchable in Acrobat reader in certain conditions) where this thread is mentioned.

Just wondering if this was resolved?  I'm facing the exact same issue.  I can't have the Fo1S0 series of fonts appearing as not embedded.  I'd love to get rid of them altogether! Please advise if you've found a solution. Thanks!
