PDF-Size is different to size in document?
« on: November 08, 2016, 10:05:43 am »
Hello Community,

I´m a newbie at Scribus and have a problem with the size of an PDF for an Business-Card.

The print-company wants to have the PDF in a size of 89x59mm (see here their example here: http://www.saxoprint.de/Librarys/global/saxoprint/docs/templates/de/pdf/85x55mm_landscape_2s.pdf) and I made - for my understanding  :-\  - everything right for, but the result is a size of 91x61mm!  :o

Please have a look on the different values (see screenshots in this PDF: http://workupload.com/file/hz52Uk7) I´ve choosen in the .sla - maybe you experienced specialists can recognize my mistake quickly!

Thank you very much!  :)

hi alex

saxoprint asks for a document size of 85×55 mm with 2 mm bleeds all around. (the resulting .pdf size will be 89×59 mm…
btw. there's a scribus forum in german under scribus-user.de.

Thanks for your comment & your suggestion for the German forum, Utnik!  8)

In my communication with Saxoprint they told, that the total size of the PDF should be 89 x 59 mm.

Quote of their message (in German....):

"Der Sicherheitsbereich von 3 mm wird mitgedruckt. Das Endformat Ihrer Visitenkarte beträgt 85 x 55 mm - mit Randanschnitt (welcher weggeschnitten wird) sollte die Datei 89 x 59 mm groß sein. Alle Schriften/Logos etc. sollten sich innerhalb des Bereiches 79 x 49 mm befinden um bei Ausreizen der Toleranzen nicht in den Beschnitt zu gelangen."

I would like to reach this goal with my preferences in the document & during export to PDF. ;)

hi alex

the following settings will lead to your desired .pdf file:
  • document size: 85×55 mm
  • bleeds: 2 mm
  • margins: 3 mm (just to keep your content within the safe zone of 79×49 mm)
  • check 'use document bleeds' in 'save as pdf' → 'pre-press' → 'bleed settings'

Dear Utnik, thanks again & I tried it exactly like you suggested it!

Would it help if I´m attaching the .sla may I ask for your inspection?

hi alex

your final document size (trimBox/red line in scribus) is 87×57 mm – with 2 mm bleeds. so the output has to be 91×61 mm.

here’s my assumption:
  • the initial file size was 87×57 mm
  • you changed it later to 85×55 mm in ‚document setup‘, but didn’t apply the changes to the existing page. (so it would only affect new pages…)
go to ‚file’ → ‚document setup‘ again, check the settings and check ‚apply settings to: all document pages‘ (to eliminate the old size from the whole document, i would check ‚all master pages' as well…)
after that, the exported .pdf should be 89×59 mm. (but the whole content of the card will have an offset of 1 mm to the bottom right corner – you have to correct this!)

You met the point, Utnik - now it´s working fine!   8)

Although I can not understand the sense behind "apply changes" additional to "save document"....  :-X

Thank you so much for your efforts in solving my problem - your Karma is increasing with!  ;)

Need I to flag the thread in any way as solved?

Individual pages in a document can have completely different sizes, that is why a change to the document setup does not automatically change the size of all pages. You need to explicitly tell Scribus that you want the change to affect pages that have already been created.

You could also change the size of a page using Page -> Page properties.

It is important to understand that the page size is a property of the page, not of the document.
