Thumbnails for Mac OSX

If this has been discussed before I apologize, I did not find it with a search.

Is there anyway for thumbnails to be generated of what the actual file shows?  I open up the file browser within OSX and choose preview option to see what the file actually is before opening.  Can scribus files be previewed this way on OSX?

Regards and thanks,

From what I understand this is not a feature provided by the application that created the file (in this case Scribus) but a feature of the file browser. Thus the file browser would need a plugin for Scribus files.

I found this site with plugins, but no Scribus there
http://www.quicklookplugins.com/

So someone will have to write a plugin.

well, that would be a useful feature: does anybody around here know how quick look plugins work?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Look

does not give much of a clue...

https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/Quicklook_Programming_Guide/Introduction/Introduction.html

looks a lot more complete, but i still don't know how quick look works.

is there anybody around who knows more about it?

my first question:

should scribus create the thumbnails to be shown, when saving the file or it is the plugin that creates the screenshot on the fly?

in the first case, i guess that it would not that hard to create such a plugin (scribus can create PNG for pages), in the second case, we need to call scribus without the GUI, and this is only (and in limited way) possible with 1.5.

any expert around? :-)

As far as I understand the preview is created on the fly, which means such a plugin would probably need a simplified version of the Scribus rendering engine?

But if the Scribus format could be changed to include a preview PNG of the first page a plugin would just have to read out that PNG (much like the TIFF format can contain a thumbnail image).

Thank you for the prompt responses.  I would have to agree, this would be very useful to have.  I will have to google the quick look and read up a bit more on it though I am no coder.  Anyone with the ability to file a bug/feature report to get this looked at closer would be appreciated since I do not have a mantis login.

Regards and thanks again.
