New icons

Hi,

I'm working on a new icon set for Scribus, thought I share this with you. It's a work in progress, I hope I will have something to upload in the next couple of days. There will be a dark and a light set.

Heads-up otx,
You've recieved the attention of the devs (http://lists.scribus.net/pipermail/scribus-dev/2015-January/002453.html) :)

Thanks again for your work

Good job!
Scribus need new icons to he has icons from XXI century. Not from time Windows 98.

The icons from otx look great but I'd like to see the light versions, especially against normal dialog background colours. (A lot of people don't like - or can't use - dark colour themes.)

I wonder if the complete icon sets will include icons for the other dialogs/palettes too, and not just the toolbars. (It would look strange otherwise.)

I also like the change of colour for the splash-screen image. Does anyone else think that Scribus needs a bit of a colour re-vamp? (Maybe that's a separate question altogether?) Dark blue is a bit dull - to me anyway - and a lighter colour might make it a bit more "contemporary".

I realise that dark blue gives off a fairly "solid and dependable" vibe but I think it could be a bit more "bright and fresh for a new generation". Maybe something that combines white, grey, pastels with light wood colours, as you'd see in a modern design studio setting? (Or am I just talking rubbish here? It wouldn't be the first time.) The image on this page is the sort of thing I'm talking about: https://www.liv.ac.uk/architecture/undergraduate/opendays/

P.S. Unless I've got the wrong end of the stick (again, not a unique situation), I'm not entirely sure the "Sc" window icon - top-left - would be entirely legal - Adobe-wise anyway. (I'm thinking they've probably registered every possible icon combination like that.)

personally, i would love it, if otx could upload the icon files in a public available repository (if possible with bug tracker; github?) and we can get the dice rolling...

a.l.e, I agree.

Having the icons up somewhere where people could fork their own copy to experiment with would be a good step forward. It might even allow for some sort of competition to emerge that could push the designs to evolve faster and better.

Could one of the developers - or someone else in the team - make a start on this by putting the current icons out there somewhere? It might help to get the dice in hand before the rolling starts (to - clumsily - continue your analogy!).

A competition on a pixel art website - http://wayofthepixel.net/ or http://www.pixeljoint.com/ for example - might help to get some interest.

The same could also be true for the splash screen. Even if someone has no interest in Scribus specifically, the chance of getting their artwork seen by thousands of people around the world every day when the application starts up might be an incentive for someone to come up with something brilliant.

Again, a competition on a digital art website - http://www.deviantart.com/browse/all/ springs to mind for something truly original - might be something worth looking at.

As an extension to all of this - and this might be a little controversial, but - is the Scribus application icon ready for a re-design? 1.5.0 is shaping up to be - as far as I've seen - a much more capable and modern product. Would it now be time to ditch the ancient ink nib and go with something a bit more up-to-date? (I can almost sense people choking on their food reading this.)

I realise that the application icon is sometimes seen as some kind of quasi-religious thing that must not be defaced in any way but if Scribus is touted as using "new approaches to page design" by using "a modern and user-friendly interface" (from scribus.net), shouldn't the whole "theme" of the software give that impression from the start?

I know that some - or most, or even all - of what I've said above might be a bit too much for some people to come to terms with but I'm talking from the perspective of someone who only has the best intentions for Scribus. (I've put a reasonable amount of time into the Scribus project myself and I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't think it was worth supporting.) I really think that a new brighter, modern look would get more people involved and show the world that Scribus has so much to offer.

Changes to the icons, splash screen, and application icon would mean very little extra work for the developers and this sort of thing can mostly be done in tandem so it shouldn't hold back any development or testing.

At the very least we can see the direction in which people think Scribus should be going, even if nothing is eventually done about it.

Anyway, that's my two-penneth on the matter (for now anyway).

i don't really believe in competition(s), but i would love to see a bit more of collaboration.

i can try to create a repository with all scribus graphical resources.

i can create it on friday or saturday.

and then work on that... (the first step, probably, being renaming most icons and making a patch that the team could apply to 1.5 and get sane names!)

and concerning the splash screen: no chance to get it changed before 1.6. a team member asked a designer to come up with a new one and the result has now being added to 1.5svn.
the team member very firmly turned down my funny "dev" splashscreen!

hi

i've created a repository with all the icons:

https://github.com/aoloe/scribus-ui-icons/tree/master

- fork
- branch
- improve
- make pull requests!

I like this idea. However the centered text on the bottom looks for me completely wrong and outdated. Try it aligned with the O from Open Source... or on the left just under the colour. (What do you call this colour in Englisch?)
Have you first consulted the Manual? You can probably find the solution there.
